Kitchen basics
A few repeatable methods can make unfamiliar recipes easier to approach.
Work backward from serving time
Read every step and identify the longest task, such as roasting vegetables or simmering a sauce. Start it first, then prepare quick toppings while it cooks.
Keep texture in mind
Crunchy toppings and fresh herbs are usually best added near serving. If they sit in a wet sauce or yogurt for too long, their texture changes.
Control the pan rather than the clock
Stoves and pans heat differently. Use recipe times as guides, but look for cues such as softened onions, a thickened sauce, or eggs with set whites.
Make careful substitutions
Change one ingredient at a time when learning a recipe. Taste the result and write down what worked for your next attempt.
Check photo-generated recipes
A generated recipe may assume ingredients that are not visible. Compare it with the dish, check allergens, and follow food-safety guidance appropriate to the ingredients you use.
